The urban project

For centuries, Modena's market was held in the open air in nearby Piazza Grande, today part of the UNESCO site. However, the need for better hygiene, freshness and order led the city administration of the time, headed from 1900 to 1908 by Mayor Luigi Albinelli, to plan a permanent covered building to house the city market.

After a series of major urban renewal works in the old "Contrada delle Carceri" (the historic name of the area now occupied by the market and Piazza XX), the market, designed by the technical office of the Municipality of Modena together with engineer Eugenio Marchi, was officially inaugurated on 28 October 1931.

Since then, it has protected and passed down the work of generations of food artisans, obtaining official recognition in 1997 as a Site of National Historic Interest.

The Architecture: the Elegance of Iron and Marble
From an architectural point of view, the Mercato Albinelli is a masterpiece of Italian multi-purpose design, in late Art Nouveau (Liberty) style.
Passing through the solemn wrought-iron gate at the entrance, you find yourself immersed in a building that masterfully combines the industrial aesthetics of the era with everyday commercial practicality.

Here are the architectural details not to be missed during your stroll:
- The Iron and Cast-Iron Structure: the large interior space is marked by slender pillars and metal trusses supporting the serrated canopies, providing incredible diffused natural light.
- The Graziosi Fountain: at the exact centre of the market, like a geometric and poetic focal point, stands a splendid travertine fountain topped by the bronze statue of the "Little Girl with a Basket of Fruit", the "ragazola", by the famous Modenese sculptor Giuseppe Graziosi. The fountain was originally used for washing fruit and vegetables, but soon became a landmark and meeting point at the Market.
- The Historic Stalls: the masonry shops still preserve their charming black-and-gold signs and today, next to the dining areas, the old fish counters in light Verona marble remain.

Atmosphere

Identity and atmosphere

The market of "FRESHNESS" par excellence: inimitable flavours, scents and colours.

The splendid architecture, the colourful stalls, the scents, the coming and going of people in search of quality, of the taste of tradition and of the most special products.

With its stalls, the Market is also an exceptional ambassador for the area's most typical products: Aceto Balsamico di Modena, Parmigiano Reggiano, Lambrusco, artisan cured meats, fresh pasta.

At the Market you will also find much of the very best food and wine, not only local but from all over Italy.

Every morning the Albinelli comes alive with voices, scents and colours that tell the story of the most authentic Modena. A sensory experience you will not find anywhere else — enriched by the personal relationship with the true protagonists of the Market: the traders!

“It is a pleasure to come and shop here, because you can find the best of Modenese gastronomic tradition: genuine, skilful, made of exceptional products.”

The Market's traders are often heirs of families who have manned the same stalls for generations. Continuity and the handing down of artisan knowledge are an integral part of the identity of this place.

Community

Social life

There is always time for a chat — in dialect, or in English and other languages with the many tourists.

People come to the Albinelli to shop and to discover the tradition this place hands down, but also to feel part of a community: it is one of those places where you can still greet each other with a look and a word, comment on life in general, on children growing up, on the changing weather, on everyday things. At the Mercato Albinelli, shopping is also an excuse to spend time together. The traders know their regular customers by name, along with their preferences. At the Market, you follow the seasons!

A place where stories, scents and flavours have been meeting for over ninety years.
