However, the need for better hygiene, freshness and order led the city administration of the time, headed from 1900 to 1908 by Mayor <strong> Luigi Albinelli<\/strong>, to plan a permanent covered building to house the city market. <br><br> After a series of major urban renewal works in the old \"Contrada delle Carceri\" (the historic name of the area now occupied by the market and Piazza XX), the market, designed by the technical office of the Municipality of Modena together with engineer Eugenio Marchi, was officially inaugurated on <strong>28 October 1931.<\/strong><br><br>\n\nSince then, it has protected and passed down the work of generations of food artisans, obtaining official recognition in 1997 as a <strong>Site of National Historic Interest.<\/strong><br><br><strong>\nThe Architecture: the Elegance of Iron and Marbl<\/strong>e<br>\n\nFrom an architectural point of view, the Mercato Albinelli is a masterpiece of Italian multi-purpose design, in late <strong>Art Nouveau (Liberty) style.<\/strong><br>\n\nPassing through the solemn wrought-iron gate at the entrance, you find yourself immersed in a building that masterfully combines the industrial aesthetics of the era with everyday commercial practicality.<br><br>\nHere are the architectural details not to be missed during your stroll:<br>\n\n\n- <strong>The Iron and Cast-Iron Structure<\/strong>: the large interior space is marked by slender pillars and metal trusses supporting the serrated canopies, providing incredible diffused natural light.<br>\n- <strong>The Graziosi Fountain<\/strong>: at the exact centre of the market, like a geometric and poetic focal point, stands a splendid travertine fountain topped by the bronze statue of the<strong> \"Little Girl with a Basket of Fruit\"<\/strong>, the \"ragazola\", by the famous Modenese sculptor Giuseppe Graziosi.
